A day in the life of a med student, mom, and nurse

A week in the life of a med student, mom, and nurse.

620a – Wake up.  I usually wake the kids up (10, 8, 2) right after I get up.  It was hard to get them (and myself), out of bed because I completely forgot it was Daylight savings last night.  “Spring ahead” did not fall in my favor.

All the morning things – breakfast for the kids (protein drink for myself).

730 – Out the door with the kids.  Drop off the boy first, then the girl (two different schools because of course there is.  And they are ten minutes apart and yet start at the same time.  I scream internally every morning at this fact.)  Then drive to the next town over to drop off toddler.

8 – Chat with my worth-her-weight-in-gold daycare provider for awhile.  She had food poisoning over the weekend and I promise her I’ll bring her a smoothie from the amazing chinese food place in town when I come later to pick up toddler.

9a – at home in study mode.

Went over coronary blood flow, reading an EKG, and reading Chest XRays, vascular histology, etc.  We’re in the cardiovascular block if you can’t tell.

12p – lunch (broccoli and turkey sandwich).  Washed a couple dishes.  Got stuff ready for work.  Wrapped a birthday present from my daycare provider to my older daughter- I offered since she was sick over the weekend (and has kids of her own).  Indulged in Tik Tok while doing all that.

1236 – Anki (flashcards).  1507 cards due.  1086 left (most were review so easy to fly through).  Really want a nap.

130- bathroom break, finish getting work stuff ready/going through papers.  MUST FIGHT URGE TO NAP

140 – watched another lecture

220 – don’t really have time to start a new lecture so I clean the layers of dust off of my recumbent bike and pedal for about 20 minutes.  Few more Anki cards while doing this.

240 – Social media break on couch

256 – kids walked in the door from riding the bus home from school.  Girl opened the gift I wrapped earlier.  Boy already complaining about going to girl’s gymnastics in a little bit.

315 – Colored stickers with girl while boy played on his Nintendo Switch

345 – The 3 of us left for the bank, then picked up Toddler.  And…. I forgot the damn smoothie.

430 – Gymnastics.  Remembered girl’s water bottle this time.  My husband meets us at gymnastics after he gets off work.  We take turns wrangling Toddler while Girl does gymnastics.  Toddler ends up whacking her face on a glass window.  Cue the bloody nose.

5 – Had to sign up online for an elective class for Friday.  Sign up opens at 5p so you have to hop on right away to get the class you want.

528- Connect to zoom call to listen to a presentation on getting started in research.  A lot of my peers are already involved in research but with the struggles I had the first half of this school year, I am a little behind on this.  Lucky that our school offers this lecture series (and they pair you up with a research coach!).

532 – Gymnastics is over – say goodbye to everyone.  I have to work tonight (I picked up extra hours).  Rest of the fam heads home.

540- at chinese food place mentioned earlier to pickup smoothie because even though she said nevermind, I feel too guilty that I forgot.  Run it over to her.

555- Stop at the grocery store to get myself dinner and snacks for work tonight.

610- Sitting in car- pondering what to do until work.

615-642 Anki cards.  Down to 836.

Sit in silence.  Ponder why I agreed to pick up extra hours.

653 – head into the hospital for work.

7 – Get report on the unit patients from day shift.  A lot of work left over from days.  Have to input multiple orders for a new patient.

8 – sit in on a therapy group for a few minutes. Assess all patients.  Pass meds.

845 – chart on patients.  Eat some cheesy chicken and rice.

905 – work on this blog.  Pass some more meds

955 – pass the last of the meds.  Patients are all in bed now.  Time to get crackin’ on some more studying.

1005 – Call our doc about a possible admission.  Need coffee.

1020 – watch lecture on cholesterol synthesis and dyslipidemia

1135 – get info on possible new patient.  Talk to emergency department.  I’m getting pretty tired- definitely catching myself staring at the clock more and more.

1140 – accept new patient.  Get paperwork ready.

1210 – my replacement comes.  Give her report- chat.

1235- head home

113 – laying down on couch.  Attempted more Anki.  800 left
